Osteopathy in Pregnancy

By Dr Adam Nicholson, Osteopath at Intouch Health Co.

During pregnancy a mother-to-be’s body will undergo significant changes to accommodate the growing baby. Those changes are necessary to ensure maximal growth for bub as well as comfort for both. Yes, needing to eventually walk like a duck is just one of them!

Unfortunately, in most cases women will experience discomfort or pain in different areas across the body. (I know some mothers are reading this and subconsciously nodding!). Pain can vary from a dull ache, sharp stabbing to cramping and tightness.

These areas can range from;

  • lower back pain,

  • gluteal pain,

  • sciatic pain,

  • pubic bone pain or pressure,

  • middle back pain and

  • abdominal pain and pressure.

Osteopaths are trained to recognise areas of issue called ‘dysfunction’ in the human body. These dysfunctions can be joint, muscle, fascial or ligamentous related and when left untreated will usually impede a pregnant woman’s body to naturally change shape as the baby grows. In most cases these dysfunctions are the main drivers that cause pain and discomfort.

More importantly, once the pain has improved Osteopaths can continue to treat and improve movement in the lower back and pelvis to help prepare the mother-to-be for delivery. If the body has movement in these areas then delivery can become much safer and easier for both Mum and Bub. Just ask your midwife or obstetrician the difference extra space and movement can make with a birth!

Treatment is all ‘hands-on’. It is gentle, safe and generally non-painful. We generally use soft techniques to help improve your pain and restore movement.

At InTouch, our Osteopaths treat all kinds of areas of pain and discomfort during pregnancy. If you require any further information or would like to make an appointment please email us at admin@intouchosteo.com.au, visit our website www.intouchhealthco.com.au or call (02) 4648 3500.
